Inspirational Science of the Week

This has been a great week in science for plants and fungi! There are two studies that really captured my attention and imagination:
  • The largest clinical trial ever conducted on psilocybin (a psychoactive natural product found in certain species of medicinal mushrooms) revealed results that this compound is effective in treating serious cases of depression. Here's a great summary of the study findings on STAT News.
  • All that glitters is not gold... it can also be from a plant! A fascinating study on natural sparkle resulting from the structural reorganization of plant cellulose nanoparticles was published. Check on this Fast Company article for a description of how scientists developed a totally biodegradable glitter from plants!
